Understand the signs of a refrigerant leak, the correct repair process and why repeated gas top-ups are not a lasting solution.

Common signs of a leak

Loss of cooling, long run times, partial coil frosting, low-pressure alarms and oil staining may indicate a leak. These signs are not proof on their own, so measurements are required.

How leaks are located

Technicians may use visual inspection, electronic leak detectors, soap solution and pressure testing with dry nitrogen. The method depends on the equipment and suspected leak location.

The correct repair sequence

The refrigerant should be handled safely, the leak repaired, the system pressure-tested, evacuated and charged according to the equipment requirements. Operation and temperatures should then be verified.

Why gas top-ups repeat

Refrigerant is not normally consumed like fuel. If charge is repeatedly low, there is likely a leak or previous service problem. Adding refrigerant without repair wastes money and can harm performance.

Information to provide

Send the equipment model, refrigerant type where visible, fault history and photographs of oily or iced areas. Do not touch damaged pipework or attempt to release pressure.

When to call a technician

Arrange professional assessment when equipment cannot maintain a safe temperature, repeatedly trips, shows refrigerant or electrical concerns, or risks stock loss. Provide clear photographs and do not dismantle live or pressurised components.
